MASSACHUSETTS

FRANCES HAMMOND
In November 1633 "Frances Hammond our brother Thomas Leveritt's maid servant" was admitted to
Boston church (BChR 16]. No evidence whether she married, died or returned to England.

MARGERY HAMMOND
"Marjery Hammond a maid servant. She came to N.E. in the year 1632 & about half a year after
was joined to the church & after some years she was married to John Ruggles of this church"
(RChR 75].
COMMENTS: John Ruggles arrived in New England in 1635 with wife Barbara and settled in
Roxbury. Barbara died in January 1636/7, so the marriage of John Ruggles and Margery Hammond
took place after that date. John Ruggles had no children with Margery, and in his will of 28
February 1657 he made several bequests to "my beloved wife Margery" [SPR 1:420].
On 6 December 1674 "Sister Ruggles wife to John Ruggles senior died. She was a meek & a godly
Christian, much lamented by her neighbors, her fever & ague turned to a calenture, at last,
disordered her head, but her very disorders were holy & sanctified & so she finished. Buried
the 7th day of the month" [RChR 181 ].

PHILLIP HAMMOND
"Phillip Hammond widow" was admitted to Boston church as member #40 [BChR 13]. This placement
would be late in 1630, and would indicate arrival on the Winthrop Fleet.
On 1 September 1639 the Boston church excommunicated "Philip the wife of our brother Robert
Harding admitted by the name of Philip Hammond widow" for openly criticizing church and court
for their treatment of Anne Hutchinson [BChR 25].
