CHEROKEE
U.S. COURT OF CLAIMS 1906-1910
22696...THOMAS HAMMONDS and 3 children, Novlesville IN
Rejected. Ancestors not on rolls. Does not establish
genuine connection with Cherokee Tribe. 1868 Test
Nancy A. Perkins, sister of Thomas Hammond:
I am 65 years old and I live in Indianapolis IN. I claim my Indian
blood through my grandfather Mark Hammonds, who was a full blooded Cherokee
Indian. He was my father's father. My father was born in NC
and was 62 years of age in 1875. He died in Hamilton County IN and
was born in Orange Co. NC. He was a grown man at the time he left
NC. My mother was married in IN and I am the second child by this
marriage. My grandfather, Mark Hammons was born and raised in NC.
He was a tolorably old man when he died, in 1848 or 1849. He lived
in Orange and Randolph counties. He never received any money from
the government on account of his Indian blood, nor did my father.
My father was recognized as an Indian up here. And my grandfather
was also recognized as a Cherokee Indian. My grandmother on my father's
side was a white woman. There may be a little colored blood on my
mother's side, but none of my ancestors on either side were ever held as
slaves. My great, grandmother on my mother's side was a white woman,
her husband was mixed Indian and colored. I am a sister to Thomas
Hammons, #22696 and Mary E. Roberts, #//////// and Victoria Henderson,
Alice Lindley and Sarah J. Roberts, and Cassius Hammons. I am also
aunt to Oscar Robbins, and Annice Furgerson, Leola Burden, and Effie O.
Dempsey. Signed: Nancy A. Perkins, Noblesville, IN Aug 17,
1908.
