Obadiah Hammonds from Dickey Diary page 2201
A WAR TALE
Obadiah Hammonds was a fellow soldier of my father.  He was very homely. One morning in camp
he said; "Tom we will all be killed today."  My father said; "Oh I hope not.  I should hate to look
at you after the flies blow you for you are so ugly now that we can hardly stand to look at you."

Mrs E.V. Hawkins

Connersville, Ind.

Dear Madam,

Replying to your letter of 21st April sent me with enclosure by the postmaster at Augusta, GA let me say.
I am Harry Hammond b. 1832 son of James H. Hammond Governor Senator & S' to whom your letter was addressed and who died in 1864.

My father was the son of Elisha Hammond b. 1774 d. 1823 or 4 Elisha was the son of Ebenezer Hammond & Deborah Teny. Ebenezer's father was Elisha Hammond whose daughter Hannah married David (the record has it Daniel) Pratt from whom you are descended.

Elisha 1st was selectman & assesser of the town of Rochester, Mass.  These facts I gather for you from the Hammond Genealogy written by Dr Roland Hammond and published by David Clapp & Son printers Boston price $4.00

The work mentions 7 Elisha Hammonds but I can not see that any of them were in the Revolutinary War. Perhaps
you might register with the Colonial Dames on account of the offices held by Elisha 1st.

I hope you will be as little disappointed as I am, at not to have a revolutionary ancester as-I-am-.  There is a tradition that Deborah, mother of my grandfather watching the Battle of Bunker Hill from a balcony in Boston became so agrivated that she let my grandfather an infant fall. Her agitation was caused by knowing she had two brothers in the fight.

I wish there never had been any revolution and that we were still part of the greatest Empire of the world.
If you should visit this section be sure to come and see us.

                                                                                                              Very Truly Yours

                                                                                                         P.O. Augusta, GA RFD 3

Written in margin: My father Elisha Hammond married Catharine Fox Spann her mothers maiden name was Fox. My grandfather Spann fought the Tory Bloody Bill Cunningham.

This Harry Hammond was sorry excuse for a Hammond. Read his life story.
