Library Closings

Both libraries will be closed  Monday, February 16th to observe Presidents' Day.   No items are marked due on those dates.

Patrons of the Month--The Vaught Family

The Middlesboro-Bell County Public Library has chosen The Vaught Family as the Patrons of the Month for February 2009.
When asked what the library means to them, Deanna Vaught wrote:

"The Middlesboro Public Library has been wonderful with many entertaining and educational programs along with useful books and computers, especially for our two children.  Janna and Warren love to read books.  They really enjoy visiting the library two or three times a week for various exciting activities.  The children's paternal grandmother was a librarian and a teacher for many years, so we do appreciate the outstanding educational service the library has provided over the years.  My mother, Adela, enjoys working the puzzles when she comes with us.  The library staff has been very reliable and helpful to us, especially our kids.  We are fortunate to have a good library system in our tri-state community.  Thank you!"

Spotlight Novel

Novels and stories / Zora Neale Hurston

At the height of the Harlem Renaissance during the 1930s, Zora Neale Hurston was the preeminent black woman writer in the United States. She was a sometime-collaborator with Langston Hughes and a fierce rival of Richard Wright. Her stories appeared in major magazines, she consulted on Hollywood screenplays, and she penned four novels, an autobiography, countless essays, and two books on black mythology. Yet by the late 1950s, Hurston was living in obscurity, working as a maid in a Florida hotel. She died in 1960 in a Welfare home, was buried in an unmarked grave, and quickly faded from literary consciousness until 1975 when Alice Walker almost single-handedly revived interest in her work.

Among the pieces in this volume is her landmark novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God."  One of the most important works of twentieth-century American literature, Zora Neale Hurston's beloved 1937 classic, Their Eyes Were Watching God, is an enduring Southern love story sparkling with wit, beauty, and heartfelt wisdom. Told in the captivating voice of a woman who refuses to live in sorrow, bitterness, fear, or foolish romantic dreams, it is the story of fair-skinned, fiercely independent Janie Crawford, and her evolving selfhood through three marriages and a life marked by poverty, trials, and purpose. A true literary wonder, Hurston's masterwork remains as relevant and affecting today as when it was first published -- perhaps the most widely read and highly regarded novel in the entire canon of African American literature.

More recommended fiction:

  • Black boy / Richard Wright
  • The color purple / Alice Walker
  • A lesson before dying / Ernest Gaines
  • A gathering of old men /Ernest Gaines

Spotlight Nonfiction

The Black List / Timothy Greenfield-Sanders

Twenty-five prominent African-Americans of various professions, disciplines, and backgrounds offer their own stories and insights on the struggles, triumphs, and joys of black life in America and, in the process, redefine "black list" for a new century. As seen in original portraits by renowned photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and interviews conducted by journalist, critic, academic, and radio host Elvis Mitchell, this group exemplifies today's most accomplished, determined African-Americans, whose lives and careers form a trail of inspiration and example for people of all races. Spanning the arts, sports, politics, and business, the diverse accomplishments and lives of these remarkable individuals create a kaleidoscope of ideas and experiences, and provide the framework for a singular conversation about the influence of African-Americans on this country and on our world.--From publisher description.

Go Tell It On the Mountain

From the voice of one of America's most famous authors, James Baldwin, comes the acclaimed motion picture adaptation of one of the most important novels of our time. This is a story of violence and desire, or tenderness and compassion, so gripping and moving, which lays bare the trails and sufferings, the yearnings and aspirations of three generations of an African-American family. The journey of a family from the rural south to Harlem, seeking both salvation and understanding and of a young boy struggling to earn the approval of a self-righteous and often unloving father.  Stars Alfre Woodard and Paul Winfield.
