Library Closings

Both libraries will be closed Saturday, July 4th to observe Independence Day.  No items are marked due on that date.

Patron of the Month: Savannah Watts

Seven-year-old Laken Savannah Watts has been chosen by Pineville Library staff as Patron of the Month for July.

She says, "I started going to the library when I was about four years old.  I read a lot of books and enjoy using one of their computers.  I go to the Pineville Library about three or four times a week.  From reading so much, my teacher said I read at 7th grade level.  I am seven years old."

Book Signings at Pineville Branch

Area authors have been invited to sell and sign their books at Pineville-Bell Co. Public Library on Saturday,  July 11th from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.   Writers who have already responded to the invitation are:

Larry Thacker
is the author of Mountain Mysteries: The Mystic Traditions of Appalachia

Pat Biggerstaff
has written The Back to Basics Gardener, Pat & Travis in the Back to Basics Kitchen, and The Back to Basics Gardener II

Minister (and musician) Jim Woodring is the author of It's Always My Fault: A Survivor's Story

Smile...You're On Candid Camera
To better serve our customers, both libraries have installed security cameras in all public areas of the buildings, as well as outdoors at entrances and parking areas.   These cameras record 24/7 and will be helpful  both in deterring and resolving acts of theft or vandalism, as well as serving as an "eye witness" during accidents or mischief.

Fast Forward at KET

A new service from KET makes adult basic education video content available on-demand through online-video streaming.   FastForward offers library patrons who are studying for the GED or building their workplace skills the chance to use the high-quality content KET is known for--and watch it whenever they want.   Having this video content streamed online provides learners with the option of viewing the content whenever they have time rather than being limited to television broadcast times.

Programs available are:

  • GED Connection

  • Pre-GED Connection

  • Workplace Essential Skills

  • TV411 (reading, writing, math, parenting, money matters, & health)

Access these videos at:  www.fastforwardky.com

Thanks to...

  • Ron and Laura Silverster for a gift of children's movies to Pineville branch

  • Gloster and Jacqueline Barnett for a gift of movies to Pineville branch

Tweet...Tweet

Have you twittered?  Have you some tweeps already?  Twittering is the hottest current way to send out news and libraries are using it to update info about programs, new materials, policies, etc.   If you'd like to "follow" the library on Twitter, go here.

Coming Soon....

….free downloadable films and TV programs such as Inspector Morse, Antiques Roadshow, Rick Steves’ Europe, Kratt’s Creatures, Life Skills for Young Adults, Phantom of the Opera, McClintock, Boohbah, Today’s Homeowner, America’s Test Kitchen, Rosemary & Thyme, and (coming soon) Ozzie & Harriet, Beverly Hillbillies, Bonanza, the Lone Ranger, Petticoat Junction, and Northern Lights.
All you’ll need is a library card.  More about that in a future issue of this column.

...video phone for the hearing impaired.  In the coming months each library will install a video phone that will allow the hearing impaired to call other video phones or to call a relay service where an interpreter can see the caller signing  (use of American Sign Language is required) and will interpret for the caller in calls to other individuals.

Redundant Books

Even when a formal used book sale is not scheduled, both libraries have areas where books no longer needed are sold to help purchase new books.  Occasionally media is also for sale.  Books range from 10¢-25¢ at Pineville and from 10¢-$2 at Middlesboro.    Sometimes a book that was once a bestseller doesn't circulation for a years, but it might be just the title you're looking to include in your home library.   Some older books are purchased by crafts persons, while others are bought by decorators.  (Yes, you'd be surprised how often we are asked if we have any "maroon books for sale.")

Adult Summer Reading Program Continues at Middlesboro

“Master the Art of Reading” this summer at the Middlesborough-Bell County Public Library and explore the worlds of art, books, and more. Get in touch with your creative side! The 2009 Summer Reading Program is open to adults ages 18 and older, and offers programs, prizes, book discussions, hands-on creative opportunities and special events.

The first book discussion session will be held on June 23, 2009 at 10:30 a.m.  “Pam Blank and I selected Girl in Hyacinth Blue, by Susan Vreeland for our first meeting and we’ll discuss the The Careful Use of Compliments and 44 Scotland  Street, by Alexander McCall Smith for the July 21, 2009 session, because they compliment the summer reading theme,” said Michele Lawson.   A reading brochure and booklist will be available to those who register in the library.

Summer was kicked off with a new program called the Craft Basket on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. and meet again on July 14, 2009.  Although the intention is for the Craft Basket program to continue throughout the coming year, it also ties in with the summer reading art theme. The program will bring people who enjoy arts and crafts together.  For the two summer programs there will be a project planned at each session and led by instructors, but future meetings will allow individuals to bring along their own project to do while they  socialize together.   You do not have to attend the reading discussion programs to participate in the Craft Basket program, however, you must register to attend by calling 606-248-4812 to assure materials are available,” explained Lawson.

For the June 23rd session of Adult Summer Reading, the group of 15 read and discussed Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland.
Here are some photos from the event:

Sherry Scaggs, Judy Gulley, and Teresa Williams

Tony Gilbert, Ann Shumate, and Sally Smith

At the June 9th session of the Craft Basket, Helen Wilder and Karen Lambeck led the group in making bookmarks and cards, using scrapbooking and stamping techniques.
